Risk Takers

Sometimes we need to take a chance.Bridge_SM2.jpg

Many of you may have seen the charming, animated film “Shrek,” featuring a talkative and cocky donkey who just can't seem to keep quiet.

In one memorable scene, Shrek, the large green ogre, sets off to rescue Princess Fiona with Donkey joining him on the journey. As they make their way towards the castle surrounded by boiling lava where Princess Fiona is held captive, Shrek and Donkey must navigate a rickety, unstable bridge. With fear creeping in, Donkey hesitates and exclaims, “I’m not going!”

Shrek calmly responds, “You're already halfway there.”  To which Donkey replies, “Yeah, but I know that first half is safe!”

"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for."  –  John A. Shedd

The quote by John A. Shedd perfectly captures the essence of Jesus' teaching in the parable of the talents. Just like ships are meant to sail the vast oceans and not stay anchored in the safety of the harbor, we are meant to step out of our comfort zones and take risks in order to grow and fulfill our potential. Despite it being easier to stay in our comfortable routines, whether it be in our careers, relationships or personal pursuits, we should remember there are positive risks worth taking.
