As the compassionate pastor of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Gassaway and Risen Lord Church in Maysel, Father Thien purchases 200 Thanksgiving turkeys each year for those most in need. In communities like Clay County, where grocery stores are a long and challenging drive away, these efforts are more essential than ever.

Persistent poverty, affecting more than 15% of West Virginia's population, weighs heavily on these communities. As they navigate the long-term economic transition from coal mines to tourism, families face mounting challenges, including mental health struggles — four counties in this region rank lowest nationally for mental health support.

Divine Word Missionaries have supported Appalachia since the 1970s, offering both spiritual and material aid. Father Thien continues this vital mission, providing food to about 800 people monthly through the St. Thomas and Risen Lord food pantries. These distributions are carefully timed when government assistance dwindles, ensuring no family goes without.

Now, more than ever, we need your help to continue this mission of love and support. Your generosity can make a lasting impact and reinforces our collective mission of compassion and faith.

Help us fight hunger. A single $40 donation provides a full meal to a family on Thanksgiving!
