Not All Wounds Can Be Healed

Not all wounds can be healed.

Nails.jpgA boy who was always in a bad mood was given an interesting exercise by his father. He gave the boy a bag of nails and a hammer and told him that every time he lost his patience, he should drive a nail into the wooden fence.

On the first day, the boy drove 37 nails into the fence, but in the following days, he managed to control his temper and hammered fewer nails. After a few months, he proudly went to his father and informed him that he hadn't driven in a single nail for a week. Then his father proposed that every time he controlled himself, he should remove a nail from the fence.

When after a long time there was not a single nail left to remove, the father said, “I congratulate you on the effort that you put into working on your temper but look at the fence and understand how important it is to control yourself before saying or doing something hurtful. Just as those holes from the nails will remain, so too can wounded hearts never fully heal.”

As Christians, we are called to emulate the love and forgiveness shown to us by God. This means choosing to respond to others with kindness, grace, and understanding even in difficult situations. By striving to live in a way that aligns with these principles, we can create a more peaceful and harmonious existence with those around us.

Let’s think for a moment before we say something harsh or do something that could hurt someone and let’s try to live in such a way that no one must forgive us.

"Be at peace with your own soul; then heaven and earth will be at peace with you." - St. Augustine
