How was He?
In Brazil, where public hospitals are truly overwhelmed, a story is shared often:
Jesus looked down from heaven on the overcrowded hospitals. Moved by compassion, He decided to help the doctors at one hospital. Donning a white coat, He entered the office, and His presence was immediately noticed by everyone in the waiting room. Whispers quickly spread among the patients, all curious about the new doctor and wondering what He would be like.
The first patient to see this new doctor was a man in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down. After just a few minutes, the door opened and to everyone's astonishment, the man walked out on his own, leaving his wheelchair behind. Naturally, everyone was eager to know about the new doctor.
“So, how is the new doctor?” they asked the healed man.
“Just like all the others,” he replied. “He doesn't even have time to talk.”
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
The Serenity Prayer is commonly used by people recovering from addiction but is also powerful for anyone who struggles to recognize the blessings they have received. A reflection with the same teaching as the story above, it reminds us that we receive blessings in ways we may not realize.
"In all created things, discern the providence and wisdom of God, and in all things give Him thanks."
- St. Teresa of Ávila
